Description of event
Andy on PKTO had a great idea with the "Leave no Trace" initiative he posted on this site, and it gave me the idea for getting PKTO involved with something out in the community. After checking out the available activities going on in the city, we decided that tree planting was something this site had never participated in and we would give it a shot! Downsview Park held an event called the "Team Green Challenge" where people all come together to help beautify Downsview Park by planting trees.
Our time slot for planting trees in the forest at Downsview Park was 12:30 and we started right on time. A Downsview volunteer walked us to the area we would be planting in, showed us what to do, and away we went. They wanted people to limit to 1-2 trees per person, but PKTO members just went way too fast for that, and in turn we ended up planting about 60-70 trees in an hour and a bit.
Will those trees survive? Well judging by the crop from last years and the year before it, I'm not sure. But we helped out as much as we could, soaked up some sun and had a great time. After the event, and after a few late people found us, the group headed over to sheppard station to train around the area.
To continue Andy's idea of cleaning and helping areas we train in, there will be further events of this nature the rest of the year and for years to come. Thanks to everyone who came out and thanks to Pete for taking the wonderful pictures! His website can be found under the top banner.
